Are You Saved By Faith Alone?
What Does the Bible Actually Say?
This is one of the most important questions a person can ask.
Are we saved by faith alone?
Or do we need faith plus works?
Many people – including entire churches and traditions – teach that salvation comes through a combination of faith and good works. But Scripture speaks clearly:
We are saved by God’s grace alone, through faith alone, in Jesus Christ alone.
Not because of what we do – but because of what He has done.
Saved by Faith Alone? Here’s the Biblical Answer
Yes – we are saved by faith alone.
But true saving faith is never empty. It produces a changed life and good works as evidence – not as the cause – of salvation.
Salvation Is a Gift, Not Something We Earn

Ephesians 2:8–9
“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”
Salvation is:
- By grace
- Through faith
- Not from ourselves
- Not by works
Romans 11:6
“And if by grace, then it is no longer by works; otherwise grace would no longer be grace.”
Grace and works cannot be mixed as the basis of salvation.
We Are Justified by Faith – Not Works
Romans 3:28
“For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law.”
Galatians 2:16
“…a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ…”
Romans 5:1
“Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
⚠️ If You Rely on Works, You Are Under a Curse
This is where Scripture gives a very serious warning.
Galatians 3:10
“For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse…”
Why?
Because if you choose the law as your way to be made right with God, you must keep it perfectly.
Galatians 3:12
“The one who does them shall live by them.”
And no one can do that.
If you try to be justified by your works, you place yourself under a standard you cannot meet – and therefore under condemnation.
Stumbling Over the Law Instead of Trusting Christ
The Bible also explains why people reject faith alone:
Romans 9:31–32
“…they did not succeed in reaching that law because they did not pursue it by faith, but as if it were based on works. They have stumbled over the stumbling stone.”
People stumble when they try to earn righteousness instead of receiving it by faith.
The problem is not effort – it’s trusting in the wrong thing.
Why Works Cannot Save Us
- We are sinners
Romans 3:23
“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”
- Our righteousness is not enough
Isaiah 64:6
“All our righteous acts are like filthy rags…”
- The law exposes sin – it does not save
Galatians 3:24
“The law was our guardian… so that we might be justified by faith.”
Faith Alone vs Faith + Works
| Topic | Faith Alone (Biblical Gospel) | Faith + Works |
|---|---|---|
| Basis of Salvation | Grace through faith in Christ | Faith plus human effort |
| Role of Works | Evidence of salvation | Requirement for salvation |
| Assurance | Confidence in Christ | Uncertainty |
| Focus | What Jesus has done | What I must do |
| Result | Peace with God | Fear and striving |
Galatians 1:6–7
“…you are turning to a different gospel…”
👉 Adding works to salvation changes the gospel itself.
So What About James 2? (Faith Without Works Is Dead)
James 2:17
“So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.”
James is not saying works save you.
He is saying:
- Real faith produces real change
- True faith results in obedience
- A faith with no fruit is not genuine
Ephesians 2:10
“We are His workmanship… created for good works…”
We are not saved by works –
We are saved for works.
⚠️ Signs You May Be Trusting in Works
You might be relying on works if you think:
- “I hope I’ve done enough”
- “God accepts me because I’m good”
- “I need to earn or keep my salvation”
- “My performance determines my standing with God”
Titus 3:5
“He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to His mercy…”
✝️ It Is Finished
Jesus did not make salvation possible – He accomplished it.
John 19:30
“It is finished.”
Hebrews 10:14
“For by a single offering He has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.”
If Christ finished the work, you cannot add to it.
The Biblical Order
- God grants repentance and faith
- You believe in Christ
- You are justified
- You are saved
- Your life begins to change
Works follow salvation – they do not create it.
What Does True Saving Faith Look Like?
True faith is:
- Trusting in Jesus alone
- Turning from sin
- Receiving Him as Lord and Savior
John 3:16
“Whoever believes in Him shall not perish…”
Acts 16:31
“Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved…”
Key Bible Verses About Salvation

- Romans 3:28
- Romans 5:1
- Galatians 2:16
- Galatians 3:10
- Romans 9:31–32
- Titus 3:5
- John 19:30
❓ Common Questions
Because a saved heart desires to obey.
John 14:15
“If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.”
A changed life is evidence of true faith.
1 John 2:3–4
“Whoever says ‘I know Him’ but does not keep His commandments is a liar…”
If salvation is based on your works, then yes – you would lose it constantly.
But if salvation is by grace through faith, then your security is in Christ, not your performance.
John 10:28
“I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of My hand.”
Philippians 1:6
“He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion…”
Your salvation is sustained by God, not by your ability to maintain it.
No.
True faith changes your heart.
Romans 6:1–2
“Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means!”
If someone claims to have faith but has no desire to follow God, something is wrong.
Grace does not lead to careless living – it leads to transformed living.
These are essential – but they are the result of salvation, not the cause.
Hebrews 12:14
“Strive for… the holiness without which no one will see the Lord.”
1 John 3:9
“No one born of God makes a practice of sinning…”
A saved person will grow in obedience – not perfectly, but genuinely.
Final Thoughts
You are not saved by:
- Being good enough
- Religious effort
- Keeping rules
You are saved by:
- Grace alone
- Through faith alone
- In Jesus Christ alone
And if that faith is real, it will change your life.
Reflection Questions
- Am I trusting in Christ alone or in my own effort?
- Do I see evidence of a changed heart?
- Have I truly repented and believed?
A Simple Prayer
Lord, I know I cannot save myself.
I believe that Jesus died for my sins and rose again.
Help me to trust in Him alone.
Grant me true repentance and a new heart.
Teach me to walk in obedience, not to earn salvation – but because I belong to You.
In Jesus name,
Amen.
