When God Tests Us: Evidence We Are His Children
Have you ever felt like life was falling apart? Maybe you lost a job, faced betrayal, or prayed for years without an answer. In those moments, it’s easy to ask, “Where is God? Does He see me? Does He even care?”
The truth is, those seasons may be the very proof that you are His child.
The Bible says,
“The Lord disciplines the one He loves.” – Hebrews 12:6
God doesn’t test us to harm us. He tests us to grow us, refine us, and draw us closer to Him.
Why Does God Allow Tests and Trials?
God’s tests always have a purpose.
- To strengthen our faith. Faith is like a muscle. It only grows when it’s stretched and challenged (1 Peter 1:6-7).
- To bring us closer to Him. Trials strip away the things we lean on so we can depend fully on Him (2 Corinthians 1:8-9).
- To prepare us for greater things. God often tests before He entrusts more (Luke 16:10).
Think of gold being refined in fire. The heat brings out impurities so the gold becomes pure and strong (Malachi 3:3). That’s what God does in us.
How God Tests Us in Everyday Life
Here are a few ways we might experience His testing:
- Financial Pressure
Money gets tight. Bills pile up. You feel panic rising. The temptation to compromise your values is strong, but God is asking you to trust His provision (Philippians 4:19). - Temptations of Integrity
At work or school, you’re offered an easy way out. It could bring success, but it’s dishonest. God is testing whether you’ll choose what’s right over what’s easy. - Relational Challenges
Someone hurts you. Do you hold on to anger or forgive as Christ forgave you (Ephesians 4:32)? - Delayed Answers to Prayer
You’ve prayed for healing, a spouse, or a breakthrough for years. Nothing changes. Will you still trust His timing (Psalm 27:14)? - Suffering or Loss
Illness, grief, or deep disappointment shakes your world. Do you turn away from God or cling to Him through the pain (Job 1:21)? - Success and Prosperity
Not all tests come through hardship. Sometimes blessings test our hearts. Will you remain humble and grateful, or will pride creep in? - Surrendering Something Precious
God may ask you to let go of a relationship, dream, or comfort. Will you obey, trusting that His plans are better? - Standing for Christ in a Hostile World
Your faith isn’t popular. You may face criticism or pressure to compromise. Will you lovingly stand firm (2 Timothy 1:7)?

God’s Discipline: Before Salvation vs. After Salvation
Before Salvation: Lost Sheep in Need of Rescue
Before we knew Christ, we were like sheep without a shepherd. We wandered aimlessly, following our own desires, often heading straight toward danger without realizing it (Isaiah 53:6).
God wasn’t disciplining us as a Father yet, because we weren’t part of His family (Hebrews 12:8). But that doesn’t mean He was distant. He was actively seeking us, just as Jesus describes in the parable of the lost sheep (Luke 15:4-7).
- He often allowed circumstances—even painful ones—to wake us up.
- Consequences of our choices showed us how empty life was without Him.
- He brought people, conversations, or moments into our lives to point us toward Jesus.
Think of the prodigal son in Luke 15: he lived recklessly, and when his life fell apart, he “came to his senses” and realized his need for the Father. Before salvation, God often allows us to feel the weight of life without Him so that we’ll run to Him for rescue.
After Salvation: Beloved Sheep in His Flock
After we put our trust in Christ, everything changes. We are no longer wandering sheep—we are part of God’s flock, and He is our Good Shepherd (John 10:27-28). Now He disciplines us, but in a very different way.
- His discipline is not punishment. Jesus already bore the full punishment for our sin at the cross.
- His discipline is loving correction. Like a shepherd uses his staff to gently pull back a sheep that’s straying, God uses trials, conviction, and His Word to guide us back to safety.
- His goal is growth, not guilt. He wants to shape us into the image of Christ, making us more holy, faithful, and strong in Him (Hebrews 12:10-11).
Now when trials come, they’re never random. They have a purpose. The Shepherd is with us in every valley, guiding us step by step (Psalm 23:4).
A Real-Life Story of God’s Discipline
A friend of mine, Sarah, grew up far from God. She lived for herself, chasing success and relationships. Eventually, her choices left her heartbroken and empty.
“Nothing in my life was working,” she told me. “I felt like a lost sheep wandering in circles. Then, one day, a coworker invited me to church. For the first time, I heard about Jesus’ love and realized He was the one I’d been searching for all along.”
Sarah gave her life to Christ. But her story didn’t end there.
A year later, she faced a difficult health diagnosis. This time, instead of running to unhealthy coping mechanisms, she clung to God. “I realized the trial was making me trust Him in ways I never had before. I knew my Shepherd was with me, and that changed everything,” she said.
This is the difference. Before salvation, God uses life’s hardships to draw us to Himself. After salvation, He uses them to deepen our faith and keep us close to Him.
How to Respond When God Tests You
- Stay rooted in the Word. God’s Word is your anchor in the storm (Psalm 119:105).
- Pray with honesty. Tell Him your fears and doubts. He can handle it (Psalm 62:8).
- Lean on your Christian community. Don’t isolate yourself. Allow others to encourage and pray for you (Hebrews 10:24-25).
- Ask God what He is teaching you. Trials are classrooms. Pray, “Lord, what do You want me to learn?”
- Worship even when it’s hard. Worship changes your perspective and reminds you who is in control (Acts 16:25).
Final Encouragement: God Is With You
No matter what you’re walking through, remember this: You are not alone.
Your Shepherd is with you every step of the way. He is using this test to shape you, not break you.
“Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life…” – James 1:12
If you feel like a lost sheep today, know this: Jesus is looking for you. He laid down His life to bring you home (John 10:11).
