Romans 6 Bible Study: Dead to Sin, Alive in Christ

Spread the love

Welcome back to our Romans Bible Study here on Living for the Christ!
In the last chapter, we learned about the peace we now have with God through Jesus. Today in Romans 6, Paul tackles an important question: If we are saved by grace, should we keep living in sin?

Spoiler alert: Absolutely not!
Let’s dive into this powerful chapter about dying to sin and living a new life in Christ.

Key Themes in Romans 6

  • Dead to sin, alive to God
  • Baptism represents dying and rising with Christ
  • Freedom from sinโ€™s control
  • Becoming slaves to righteousness

Romans 6:1โ€“4 โ€“ Dead to Sin, Alive to Christ

โ€œWhat shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?โ€ โ€“ Romans 6:1-2 (ESV)

Paul knew people might misunderstand grace. They might think, “If God’s grace covers sin, maybe I should sin more to get more grace!”
But Paulโ€™s answer is strong: โ€œBy no means!โ€
When we put our faith in Christ, something miraculous happens โ€” we die to sin. Sin no longer defines us.

โ€œWe were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead… we too might walk in newness of life.โ€ โ€“ Romans 6:4

Baptism is a beautiful symbol of this. Going under the water represents death to our old self, and rising up represents new life in Christ.

Romans 6:5โ€“11 โ€“ United with Christ in Death and Resurrection

โ€œFor if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.โ€ โ€“ Romans 6:5

Paul reminds us that our old self was crucified with Christ. Sin’s power over us was broken.
Now, we can live in the freedom of resurrection life.

โ€œSo you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.โ€ โ€“ Romans 6:11

This doesnโ€™t mean weโ€™ll never struggle, but it does mean that sin is no longer our master.

Romans 6:12โ€“14 โ€“ Do Not Let Sin Reign

โ€œLet not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions.โ€ โ€“ Romans 6:12

We have a choice now: Who will rule our lives?
Will it be sin, or will it be Christ?

Paul encourages believers to offer their bodies to God instead of to sin.

โ€œFor sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.โ€ โ€“ Romans 6:14

Because of Jesus, sin doesnโ€™t control us anymore. Grace frees us to live for God!

Romans 6:15โ€“23 โ€“ Slaves to Righteousness

Paul uses a strong image: slavery.
Everyone is a slave to something โ€” either to sin or to obedience.

โ€œDo you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey?โ€ โ€“ Romans 6:16

Before Christ, we were slaves to sin, leading to death.
Now, because of Jesus, we can be slaves to righteousness, leading to holiness and eternal life.

Paul beautifully summarizes this truth:

โ€œFor the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.โ€ โ€“ Romans 6:23

This is the heart of the Gospel.
Sin brings death.
Grace brings life.
In Jesus, we are set free!
