John 5 Bible Study: Jesus Heals at the Pool of Bethesda and Declares His Authority

Spread the love

Welcome back to our Living for the Christ study through the Gospel of John.

In John 5, Jesus meets a man who has suffered for nearly four decades and speaks life into his brokenness. What begins as a healing miracle quickly becomes a bold declaration of who Jesus truly is—the Son of God with authority to give life and execute judgment. This chapter is rich with compassion, confrontation, truth, and revelation.

Key Themes in John 5

  • Jesus brings healing where hope has died
  • Tradition cannot save — only Christ can
  • Jesus is equal with the Father
  • The Son gives life and judges
  • Scripture points directly to Jesus

Historical Background: The Pool of Bethesda

To understand this miracle, it helps to understand the setting:

  • The Pool of Bethesda was near the Sheep Gate in Jerusalem.
  • It had five covered porches where crowds of sick and disabled people gathered.
  • Some manuscripts mention a tradition: when the waters were stirred, the first to enter would be healed.

Whether this belief was accurate or superstition, it shows something important:

People were desperate for hope.

Into this place of suffering, Jesus walks directly and intentionally.

Medical & Human Insight: 38 Years of Suffering

This man’s condition was not a temporary setback — it was his life.

  • 38 years was longer than the average lifespan for many ancient workers.
  • He likely lived with limited mobility and chronic pain.
  • He had no family or community support (“I have no one to help me”).
  • He was socially isolated and spiritually discouraged.
  • He returned day after day to a pool that had never healed him.

Jesus approached the most hopeless man in the crowd.

John 5:1–9 — “Do You Want to Be Made Well?”

Jesus asks a question that seems unnecessary:

“Do you want to be made well?” — John 5:6

Why ask this?

Because healing begins with willingness.

The man explains:

  • “I have no one…”
  • “Someone always goes ahead of me…”
  • “I can’t get to the water…”

He is hopeless, discouraged, helpless.

Then Jesus commands:

“Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” — John 5:8

Immediately, he is healed.

Application:
Jesus often reveals where we’ve misplaced our hope so He can redirect it to Himself.

Why Did Jesus Ask the Question?

Jesus wasn’t probing the obvious — He was:

  • Revealing the man’s hopelessness
  • Exposing his misplaced trust in the pool
  • Calling him to participate (“pick up your mat”)
  • Making the miracle undeniably from God, not the water

Jesus did not use superstition.
He used His Word.

John 5:10–16 — A Healed Man, A Hardened Crowd

Instead of celebrating the miracle, the religious leaders are upset that the man is carrying his mat on the Sabbath.

Religion says:
❌ Don’t break rules.

Jesus says:
✔ Be restored.

Later Jesus finds the man again:

“See, you are well. Stop sinning, or something worse may happen to you.” — John 5:14

This does not mean his sin caused his illness.
It means:

  • Physical healing is temporary
  • Spiritual healing is eternal
  • Remaining in sin is more destructive than any disease

Sabbath Insight: Why Was Carrying a Mat a Big Deal?

The Law said to keep the Sabbath holy.
But the Pharisees added 39 forbidden categories of “work.”

One was:
Carrying any burden.

Jesus intentionally healed on Sabbaths to reveal:

  • Their hearts valued rules above people
  • Their system replaced relationship with ritual
  • He Himself is Lord of the Sabbath

John 5:17–23 — Jesus Declares His Equality with God

Jesus responds to their accusations:

“My Father is always working, and so am I.” — John 5:17

The leaders immediately understood the claim:

He was making Himself equal with God. (v.18)

Jesus then reveals:

  • The Son does what the Father does
  • The Father shows the Son all things
  • The Son gives life
  • The Son will judge all people
  • Honoring the Son = honoring the Father

This is one of the strongest declarations of Christ’s deity in Scripture.

What John 5 Reveals About Jesus’ Identity

Jesus is not merely a healer.
He is God in human flesh.

He shares the Father’s:

  • Nature
  • Authority
  • Works
  • Honor
  • Power to give life
  • Authority to judge

If you want to know what God is like — look at Jesus.

Prophecy Connection: Isaiah 35

Isaiah prophesied:

“The lame will leap like a deer.” — Isaiah 35:6

Healing a paralyzed man was a Messianic sign.

John includes this miracle to reveal Jesus as the promised Messiah.

John 5:24–30 — From Death to Life

Jesus gives a powerful salvation promise:

“Whoever hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life… he has crossed over from death to life.” — John 5:24

whoever hears my word john 5-24 bible verse

Three steps:

  1. Hear
  2. Believe
  3. Receive life

Not future — present (“has eternal life”).

Jesus also speaks of resurrection:

  • The saved will rise to life
  • The lost will rise to judgment

This is a call to respond to Him now.

John 5:31–47 — Witnesses to Jesus

Jesus presents four witnesses:

1. John the Baptist

A burning light who pointed to the Messiah.

2. Jesus’ Works

Miracles proving divine authority.

3. The Father

Who bore witness to the Son.

4. Scripture

Moses wrote about Him (v.46).

Yet Jesus says:

“You refuse to come to Me to have life.” — John 5:40

Knowledge of Scripture is not salvation.
Coming to Jesus is.

🙏 Prayer

Lord Jesus,
Thank You for seeking out the broken and hopeless. Help me to recognize where I have placed my hope in “pools” instead of in You. Make me willing to be made well—spiritually, emotionally, and physically. Thank You for being equal with the Father, the Giver of life, and the Judge of all. Help me honor You in all I do. Amen.
